Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked during the night shift as nurse so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great tool to engage in political activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and taught her to make use of the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a young student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of one of jury. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
